An essential part of the island's history is the Native American population that has been there for thousands of years. The Wampanoag tribe of Aquinnah still exists to this day and holds annual Pow Wows on the iconic clay cliffs that surround the tribe. Here you can see the heritage of the tribe and the food and music that goes along with it. One of my best friends that I grew up with is Native American and is a member of the tribe and knows it very well. Thanks to him I have gotten to see the behind the scenes of their culture and experience many things that a normal outsider usually wouldn't get too. I have asked him about some of the different instruments that were used in his culture and according to him the instruments that are used at the Pow Wows and different ceremonies include hand drums, water drums, bigger pow wow drums, and Rattles. All these together form the iconic sound you hear during the Pow Wows and other ceremonies alike. If you have never been to a Pow Wow before then I would highly recommend that you go to one if you get the chance. It is an experience like no other and they do a great job at making you feel as if you traveled back in time.
